I had a valentine in my old car, and it got stolen along with my radion and may other items. I am looking to get a new detector and was thingking of just sticking it out and saing up to get another V1, but from everything ive read, the escort x85 (or something like that) performs for the most part as well. everyone says that the only huge advantage of the valentines is the directional arrows. anyone have any thoughts in addition to or differeing from that?

just double checked, its the "escort passport 8500 x50" that is being rated comparably to the valentines, and its about $100 less. i still love the v1's though.

I like the V1's ability to count the number of 'bogeys' as they call it. This has saved me twice so far on the highway. Honestly though, buy what you like, you will have to listen to it for quite some time.

I've only heard good things about the Valentine V1 and so that's on my "to buy" list. A friend bought the high-end Escort one, his dad had the Valentine, he used them both and told me that the V1 was on an entirely new level compared to the escort. I need some cash guys.

I was like " " this close to buying a v1 today and then came down on orders for Germany and no need to have one there! for the most part. but in my opinion a v1 is the best detector on the market. hands down. my buddy has a 505hp/495ftlbs bmw m3 which he drives through florida like its the autobahn and he has NEVER gotten a ticket using his v1. just my own personal experience with it.

so will the Pro RX55 Radar Detector detect all cop cars or only cop cars that have their radar on? because as we all know if you fly by a cop with his radar off he will still pick you off.

I know there's different degrees of legality from state to state to province to province, but I would think a simple device that detects radar would be a lot more innocent and easy to defend than a device that proactively distorts them.

Radar and laser detectors detect radar guns and laser guns IN USE. If you are passing a cop that does not have his radar/laser on, there is nothing in the air, thus nothing to detect. By the same token, he'll have no idea how fast you're going eventhough you might look like a passing blur to him. They need to have a number on their radar gun to pull someone over. However, no cop ever showed me their radar reading.

Furthermore, there is no way to avoid being clocked by pulsed radar or laser when you're the only car on the road. That is because pulsed radar and laser guns are "shot" at you, and can read your speed in an instant. Yes, your detector will go off but it would be way too late. I got nailed this way once, and the cop bragged about the fact that he nailed me with my RD on (it's not illegal to have RDs where I live). The fact that detectors are still very effective is that, most of the time, they are detecting signals that are either on constantly or "shot" at someone else ahead.

So ... just because you have a detector in the car, it doesn't mean immunity from Five-O.

Will I still buy a detector? You bet your MkV I will!

As Mike Valentine (inventor of the Valentine 1) says: "It at least gives you a sporting chance." Of course they aren't foolproof, but it's better than nothing.

I wouldn't say they have no idea. The problem is, they have spent their career learning how speed looks when going past them, so the visual will give them the clue of speed to get in their car and follow you. It's still important to LOOK for the incomming from behind.

I kinda like my Beltronics 895, but it goes off all the time and there won't be any cops around. and in my town the police are to poor to afford laser radar guns. and it still goes off. I don't konw if it is just defective, but it has saved me a couple of times.

they go off by supermarkets and areas like that so if yer passing one and it goes off that is why. i am not 100% sure why supermarkets would be making the laser detector go off but it does.

Most people think that by turning on a radar detector and watch it beep is all there is to keep you from getting a speeding ticket. This is not so ... Using a RD takes some learning. First off, when you first install it, you will drive like an old woman because it goes off in places that you would not expect. That' s OK. Afte a while, you'll learn that it goes off every time at that corner and it most certainly due to some wireless monitoring radar in the area >>> you'll ignore it.

The idea is you will have to use the RD to learn about your driving environment before it can be an effective tool against Five-O.

There are two things to watch out for to distinguish between police radar and other non-police signals (This is not fool proof, but generally accurate):

    1. signal comes on, register only 1 bar on the meter and does not get stronger. It will also disappear within 50 - 100 yards >>> NOT Five-O
    2. Signal comes on weak, gets stronger as you continue driving toward it, gets weaker as you drive away from it, and hopefully you'll have spotted a pig some where in between >>> definitely Five-O radar being used. This is exactly how it works on open highways.

Other than that, learn to use your RD and be smart about it... nothing is fool proof.
