    Default Trade in

I'm considering trading in my red 08 dsg for a white 6 speed 08 I found with 48k on it. I've never owned a manual transmission car but I feel like it would be mor fun and involving on my daily journeys. I use manual mode more than drive anyways. And it's a full package car compared to my base model. Do you guys think its worth it to have a 6 speed over the dsg? I don't care about however much faster the dsg shifts I just wan more fun (not that I don't have a blast with the dsg)

I will begin by saying that I have a HUGE bias towards stickshift because thats what I learned on and yes it is DEFINITELY more fun and way more rewarding even though the DSG is a fun trans. A majority of car nuts out there will immediately say that if you want a real "driver's car" experience the first thing you must do is drive a manual trans car. I will say also that the GTI is a GREAT first stickshift car to have because of how easy it is to drive and more so, how light the clutch is on the MKV and newer. So even in high traffic, you will still have a very livable driving experience and when you have a clear road ahead of you, you will feel a lot more involved in the driving experience. I own a 2001 1.8t GTI with a 5 speed and I love it to death. Also something to note, if you live somewhere with nasty winter weather (say, Michigan...) engine braking is definitely a useful thing. I know you can downshift in the DSG but then again you have a much more rewarding feeling from ACTUALLY doing the shifting yourself. Another small thing that you get from stick shift is that you dont have to hold your foot on the brake at lights which actually becomes really nice after a while! Another real advantage to the manual trans is that you can add more power to the engine it and not have to worry about having to upgrade the clutch right away. If you have a desire to really seriously build the car in the future then keep in mind that the DSG does not have the best track record with handling upgraded cars. The things that you will be losing with the DSG as you may know are the quicker shifts as well as better gas mileage.

I HUGE 2nd this! I HAD to learn to drive stick growing up, as I was sharing a car with my dad. Driving stick means you are actually DRIVING your car, vs just steering it.

    1. Unless you're on completely flat ground, why would you not use the brake at a red light? What exactly are you doing?

    2. DSG can handle more power than the stock clutch on the 6 speed.

Haha...I'll say this again and this is just my opinion...Saying that the manual is better than or more fun than the DSG is simply not admitting defeat to progress IMHO. It's like saying a bicycle is better than a car because, on a bicycle, you can really feel the road and not just drive over it. DSG shifts lightning quick, it does engine brake on it's own if you let it, and it's not sluggish and annoying like a typical manual. Try both. Then race both. Then convince all of your friends why you want to shift slower...Haha. Again, that's just my opinion. I see it as the best of both worlds.

I tend to agree that driving manual is more engaging and a bit more satisfying, but to say that DSG can't handle upgrades is simply not true. Sure, the mkiv automatic is teh suck, but things changed with the DSG.
