    Default 07 x 12 - MK1=Diesel daily build

Picked up this puppy today, it is a 83 hence the title.. 7x12-1=83

94k miles on this car in damn good shape for the age, got a spare motor compete with it so I'll be swapping motors. Car has everything but the head on the original motor.

Guy wanted 1300 for everything I started at 500 and met at $800 oh yeahhhh.

    On to the good stuff:

got it back to the house like this:

spare motor in the back of the truck:

after alittle elbow grease and a good hose down the paint started looking even better than when I got it!

Now to the interior, can you say completeish?

    Engine bay:

Guy tried to tell me this would "hone out" with some 320 stones and some atf. I lololo'd

The shell of this car is about 98% rust free which is damn near unheard of, It has a few light surface spots on the inside of the fender lips and alittle browning here and there but the floor pans, strut towers, spare tire well (all the problem areas) look like they just rolled off the factory floor. Sweet!

Also for clayton this is not a project really, I still put all my focus on the bmw but if I can tinker with this one a bit and get it going It will replace my truck as my daily driver. Truck used for trash runs and other truck duties.

That is in really good shape for its age and amazing that it has minimal rust. Only spot I see in the picture is where the hatch meets the body. Headliner is still there which is also pretty amazing that it is in that good of shape. Nice find.

You mean at the bottom of the rear windshield? cause thats some rust under the paint, At the top was just some tree debree before it got hosed off. Has some browning/ surface rust in the drip rails I will need to address but probably just sand them down and mask it off. I have some white primer I'm using on the bmw that will match-ish it.

turns out it's damn near impossible to just pull the motor out of one of these without just dropping the motor/trans out as a unit. Gonna drop the whole thing tonight

well after about 30 minutes of trying to manuver the damn thing out from the top realized this sucker is not coming out like that. So onto the jack stands it goes to drop it out the bottom. Good thing I already have everything disconnected short of the axles and shift linkage which I gotta figure out how to unhook.

Is it the old rod linkage?

yup it's the rod linkage with plastic ball bushings on the ends. One piece had a pin, that was easy, the other 2 had those ball bushings, pretty sure I broke one of the locking tabs on one of them but the other popped off easy.

Spent 2 hours trying to drop it out the bottom but the AC compressor was in the way so I got it out from above in about 15 minutes.

and pulled it apart in about 30 seconds cause It only had 2 bolts holding it together after my failed attempt to pull just the motor

    that would have worked..

damn. well this gives me a chance to replace all the mounts and inspect everything anyways. The inner axle bolts on the passenger side axle were like 1 ft/lb of torque and one I removed by hand.. not sure what that was about.

also removed all the A/C stuff and alternator off the original motor and started prepping the "new" motor to go in. Gonna put it on a engine stand because I have to pull the oil pan and intake and make sure nothing got in there while it was sitting.

The two transmissions are different and I cant find a damn part number on either. the original has a multi pin sensor plug next to where the shifter rod comes in and the one on the spare motor just has a sensor screwed into the trans there.

Never mind about the alt. There is not one. There is some type of pump on the bottom end of the block. Probley the water pump did not get a good look at it.

the clutch was in good shape? I know some of the clutches were like 190mm and some like 210mm I guess you have to measure the pressure plate.

letting the cylinders soak after draining the gallon of water out of the oil pan, spare engine not looking promising right now.

    Hahaha

This thing wont budge with a breaker bar bolted to the back of the crank and beating on the rods with a wooden dowel.

if I cant get it broken loose I'm going to try to bolt the tranny and starter up and bump over the starter a few times and hope the rings don't break. If they do I will pull the head off that motor and fix the head then put it on the other block I have sitting soaking it ATF.

It's not fighting compression either because I have all the intake valves cracked open with some wedges pressing down the lifter buckets to get the mystery oil in

not so much, I anticipated something like this happening which is why I only spent what I did on the car. No biggie just some more time and a few gaskets.

Put some oil on the rods and line the cylinder walls, lube the crank and cams etc

I lubed the cam lobes but I'm pretty posative it is one or two pistons stuck in the cylinders, they are filled with mystery oil right now and if they don't crack loose after a couple days I will disconnect the rods from the crank so I can beat them loose one at a time which should make life easier.

Good news, the electrical system seems to be in working order and intact short of someone removing all the bulbs from the tails/brake/side marker housings

The glow plug relay kicks on when I switch the ignition over so hopefully that is one less thing to worry about. Even the clock works.

Bad news, motor is still stuck, I unbolted each rod from the crank to determine which ones were stuck and it turned out to be the #4? cylinder the one closest to the transmission. I have been lubing and trying to work it loose but it is not looking promising. due to the position of the piston (almost at tdc about 20 degrees out) I'm thinking their might actually be an obstruction so I'm going to pull the head and deal with re-timing the injector pump when I get to that point.

Scratch that, I do not have the f'ing tool to pull the head bolts because they are like huge allen bolts. **** vw

Also when I flipped the motor over to pull the head I noticed some grease and splinters of metal that had "run" out of the piston while it was upside down. Uh oh

Allen bolt 6 point, turned out to be close to a 3/8" allen socket i got from my neighbor. Pulled the head, crap all in the cylinders. Still cant get the one piston broke loose. I don't think this will be done for sowo, but I did put some work into the bmw today.
