I don't know why people think they have to drive like old grannys during break in period. Of course you can take it on the highway, of course you can take it over 100mph, of course you can go past 4000 RPM. If anything, just don't drag race with it: take it to 5000 RPM gently. Take your time getting up to 120 and be sure to put it in 6th gear when cruising at high speed.

Thalo, you got a point there
I read somewhere that it is important to fully warm up the car before driving it

Thanks Thalo! I made the mistake of drag racing about 3 times the second night i had it. But my friends didn't think my car was fast... I had to defend my fast's honor! Now I still get up in speed but not suddenly. I hope this will help out with breaking it in. I only have about 350 miles.

Haha, the first week I owned the car I pulled out of a movie theater and find myself right in the middle of a pack of over a dozen street racers. All with their ricers with oversized exhausts blaring. They were racing off every green light and I kept in formation with them until they turned off and I had to go a different direction.

My first week I was trying to do 180's in reverse in an empty parking lot. It went surprisingly well, I slid around my friend's car about 170 degrees in an arc, which was cool.

I realize now that I was dumb, even if it didn't mess anything up. It was so pointless, but damnit, it was fun.

I blame the online video tour for the car (the one with Helga), where the GTI comes out and does a spin before stopping, all badass like

I've managed to keep it below 4k rpm for the most part, but have gotten around 5k a couple of times when in sport mode. Only when it's at operating temp though... It's really hard not to resist when that sweet hum kicks in.

Also, maybe it's 'cause my last car was a piece, but it seems now that people are gunning for me at stoplights. Weird...

I'm from the school of thought on break-in:

1: Warm it up for a few minutes before driving.
2: Don't stay at the same RPM (avoid using the crusie control for the first 1K)
3: Let it cool down at idle for a few mins when done. (Yes- I know the turbo will cool itself down after shut-off: but it's just a best practice thing)

I said in a previous post, that I really wanted to dump the oil at 500 miles, but the dealer insisted waiting until 5K unless I just want to piss $$ away.

The car was flogged thru the hills on it's second day

Default How should I drive a new engine?

I bought my GTI about 3month ago... I drove on my way to dealership, it was about 200miles....I know people've been saying I need shift under 3~4k rpm, but I was shifting around 5~6k not always, but sometime, and still...

I just can't drive at ease.... Turbo charger is crying and yelling at me....everytime I drive... This car is so amazing...anyway...

My odormeter is almost 1000miles...I know I've been driving kinda wrong... But does it actually affects my engine alot? I never had red zone rpm though...

Do you guys think that I should start driving at ease for next thousand miles?

I'm thinking of tuning my ECU at APR? When is right time for tuning a ECU?

Default Just got my GTI, have some questions

Hello, I just got my brand new candy white GTI last Thursday (what a great car) and I have some questions. What is considered a normal break in period?
The front cupholder is supposed to have an accessory that you can put in or out depending if you want to use the space as a cupholder. Mine didnย’t come with this little removable piece, is this normal or the dealership forgot to give it to me? thanks for the input.

I would suggest reading the manual on your first question.

On Cartalk they say that break-in thing is a myth. They suggest breaking it in the way you drive it. It used to be different, but with all the new metal alloys, etc there is not as many problems.

    I will take it a little easy - I mean I don't want to get a ticket!!!

I have yet to hear anyone say they broke their car in without punching it a few times during the manufacturer-recommended period. Even without my Fast sitting on the dashboard, that gas pedal just begs to be closer to the floor.

For cryin' out loud you guys... I just merged two more subjects into this one. It isn't hard to miss, it's in the general discussion area. Maybe I'll sticky it. It has every single answer and question about engine break-in repeated several times. Stop starting new subjects please!

but seriously tho, don't people floor it fresh out of the womb when they test drive it at the dealer? break-in periods are very mythical imo

Other than a couple minor deviations, I did adhere to the recommended break-in pretty well. This, despite the maniacal test drives. My salesman started the drive in both GTI's (6 speed and DSG) and drove like a madman -- I couldn't believe he kept his job after that day. I mean, he must have left rubber tracks out the dealership driveway and 100 feet down the road. At the same time, it did a good job of selling a car.

Same with my sales dude, they let me go out by myself....but he TORE it outta the park'n space and to the front of the building.......I always go with the motto "Drive it like you stole it" I've never had any problems from it......

It boils down to this, if you are the type that worries or stress by nature, you will follow the break in and all will be fine. If you aren't and don't worry/stress all that much, you will rip it from day 1 and not have any problems either.....so everyone wins

if you have any miles on the car when you drive it it was beat on. almost all workers at dealerships beat on their cars in the back and on the street.

I'm about to hit the 5000 mark to get my oil changed. Still running strong... seems better than when I first got it. Exhaust is louder as well as the engine.

Man... only 3 months and 5000 miles? I need to calm down. I had my last car for 3 years and only put 25,000 on it.
