Hi All,

My 98 GTI VR6 has started having intermittant and strange electrical problems. Yesterday, the headlights stayed on even when the car was off, and they came on before I took on the parking brake. I dsconnected the battery and of course they shut off then. When i reconnected the battery, they were off, but as soon as I started the car they came on. I did this about 3 times and they stayed off and seem to work as they should.

Today I went to start it up, and the wipers came on and stayed on. Moving the switch did nothing for them. I had to shut the car off. Also, yesterday, the AC fan would run with the car off.

has anyone had a similar problem that can point me down the right path? I know electrical issues can be difficult to trace.

Thanks,

Rich

I think they trace back to the mexican assembly plant.

Sounds to me like these issues are a faulty control module. Not sure which one that would be on a 98 vw. Could be called body control, or vehicle control module. Hec the instrument cluster to control them all. Sounds like you need to consult your dealer. You might get lucky and only need a software update. I do two or three a day for all sorts of stuff. If you need them be sure to take ALL keys and keyless entry transmitters as they often need to be relearned after these types of repairs are made.

Why dont you scan the computer, would be the must logic decision no offense. Check the ground of the computer "knok sensor". Make sure is clean and no damage. Check for any faulty conectivity of your accesories in the steering wheel and under the dash. Thats what I would do before take it to the dealer or buy any parts. Any Autozone can scan the vehicle for FREE. Good Luck
