Why do most of you hate on the Focus? Take a look sometime, that Control Blade rear suspension on the Focus (Euro debut 1998 ) is virtually copied verbatim on the MkV (Euro debut 2003). I had an 02 SVT Focus before my GTI, it was for the most part a trouble free vehicle, handled excellent, and had a great motor and tranny combo. Though, there is no comparison on build and quality of the materials that the GTI has... but the GTI cost 22-25k where the SVT started at 18-20k so that should be expected.
There are a few reasons why I switched to the GTI... my 58 year old dad bought one in December, I drove it, and fell in love with the grown up feel over the SVT. Second, traffic in my area is pretty bad, and a manually shifting automatic was what I wanted, and the DSG is amazing... almost every other manufacturer is copying this technology, including Getrag for Ford. Third, and most important to me... Ford dropped the Hatch, and I love any Euro styled hatch. All of you who talk crap about the USDM Ford products, should look VERY close at the Euro Focus ST, which has been walking all over the GTI in price, performance, overall build quality, and dare I say looks? My dad builds prototypes and special machines for the auto industry in Grand Rapids, Michigan... Ford is the majority of his business, so we've always supported "the hand that feeds". Being of German decent, VW makes sense to us, and so does his 993 Cab... so please don't bash me for supporting Ford... there is pleanty of German auto love in my family. So... in closing, I think you all who talk this **** about Ford, and the Focus should research a bit. By 2010/11 there will be a new Focus for the US, based on the Euro model... the hatch will make a return, and if history is any indicator, there will be a performance oriented hatch aimed straight at the GTI. When that happens, I will be at my Ford dealer to check it out. Last edited by myfast_gti; 04-30-2008 at 07:24 PM.. |

My neighbor is an upper level mechanical engineer for ford. He admits to their inferiority in all aspects. He drives an Audi. He loves my GTI. End of story.

I read a comparison in some car magazine a couple of years ago between a US Focus and a Euro Focus and it was night and day!
The build quality of the Euro Fords is super high (very similar to VW). I remember when my dad came to the States for the first time and sat in a Ford Countour (was supposed to be the same as his Ford Mondeo in Belgium back then), he was super shocked how they could F$&K up a car so badly. He was working at Ford Belgium at the time and we always bought Fords over there. He made me swear never to buy a Ford in the US!!! (Even though I could get employee/family discount of 25%)

...you might well have a point that the Focus svt is pretty bad-ass....BUT, you can only polish a turd so much...it's not ever really going to shine....lol And remember, we may be respectful of other cars, which is mature of us to do...but devoting this much time and waste of finger strokes on typing about how awsome the Ford forkus is could have been spent talking about your GTI. LOL...SERIOUSLY...

^^^ Neat pic, Ford dominated WRC last year... The late Colin McRae was the reason I bought a Focus in 01. Too bad WRC isn't broadcast on TV anymore... since Speedvision turned into NASTYCAR 24/7.

focus, just don't see it, there but fuzzy...
actually I'v had a lot of fun driving a Focus. Went to dealership years ago in Portsmouth, NH, I was going 100+ right before dealership. Got back in my truck and a cop has a CORROLA pulled over! Poor guy, I think they got wrong car! Why Ford, even now, won't give us the Euro Focus is beyond me. My Mom taught me not to hate, bad for your karma. |

Yeah, talking about future Focus is a bit of a stretch there. I drove an SVT before I decided to go to the fast, and though there were a few years of difference there, I was really unimpressed on about every aspect. I'd get an Si (actually, I did anyway along with the Fast) long before I'd get a Focus. Hizell, I'd get the Scooby sans hatch before, too. Build quality blows and it lacks the fun factor. Those trump the bargain price.

Seems to me that there's no point in talking about a Car that most us will never come across, much less race. If the Euro Spec Focus was actually in America then ,yes it would make for a tougher choice between a GTI and the SVT. But since its not, then its wasted time. We might as well be comparing it to a TVR or an Astra VXR.
Logic FTW

I had an '03 Ford Focus ZX3 hatchback as my first new car and it was a lot of fun. Mod list was CAI, ported TB, ported intake manifold, header, hi-flo cat, 2.5" Flex, 2.5" stainless exhaust, UDP, short throw shifter, and a lot of Euro exterior pieces. I wasn't as fast as even my stock MKV GTI, but it ran a 15.5 1/4 mile and the total vehicle cost was only $10500 new + $1200 in mods = $11700 total. Not bad for under $12k. The parts were cheap because some of them I bought used and all of the porting was done for free.

I test drove a Focus ST and a Opel Astra OPC before I bought the GTI and they are nowhere near the GTI. Focus is too stiff on road. It shakes like hell when driving thru potholes etc. and Astra's build quality is no where near the GTI. I had only one other car on mind before I got my GTI: RX8. I simply chose GTI because of DSG and 5 doors.

I also owned a 2001 Focus Sedan 2.0 Ghia and while cruising it just stopped and never ran again. Ford bought it back.

Eh it's bound to happen, it happens pretty much whenever someone asks about another car or compares said other car to the gti, remember the s2k thread?

Well, I didn't read the whole thing- TL
R.My two cents... This is a Focus: ![]() If one of you wanted to photochop an R32 or a race team would like to sponsor a friend to put a VW there in the same picture- make it happen. In the US, we don't have the same Focus made by Ford- we get the left overs. It's a good car.

My wife's Jetta has that too! I just noticed it the other day. But sadly, no batman-like VW shadow projected ahead of you when driving.

bahahahaha! My old 337 headlights shadowed a giant VW, granted you had to look at both beam patterns as a whole, and they had to align perfectly, you could see the VW...
And I do agree with Dragon, the focus is an amazing car... Just not here. The cosworths are simply stunning cars. And I would buy the new scirocco if it came out of the dealer looking like that, spoiler, massive road race aero, and wheels. |
