Default Thinking Bout Buying a GTI

Whats up fellas, Im considering buying a GTI, Im looking at one right now 2006 GTI 30k miles, leather, navigation, climiate control, sunroof, basically loaded. Price is $18,000. Got a clean carfax, anythings I should look out for?

First question is how does the price sound?

Second how reliable are VW's, Ive had Hondas and Acuras my whole life and never had a problem.

And last hows the MPG on these things 25mpg doesnt sound to bad, but thats premium fuel right, anybody pump regular?

Anyway thanks for your help in advance. Much appreciated.

I originally went to go buy a used 06 from the dealer last March (07). The dealer told me that there were a lot of 06s that were for lack of a better term test cars for the dealers. For them to beat on, to see what the DSG is capable of. Come to think of it, when I was looking at the GTI back in 06 I remember a dealer that was like 6'7" telling me how he was in one to test drive it and if it werent for his height he'd buy one, but eleuded to beating on it.

Check out the carfax (seems like you already did). See if it comes with a dealer warranty, or extended warranty and of course buyer beware.

25 highway is not unreasonable, of course depends on how you drive it. I can usually get 28-30 on highway with 6speed when I'm not trying to blow past some POS HONDA / NISSAN.

$18k sounds pretty good, but you could probably buy brand new for like $22-23....$5k difference for piece/peace of mind is worth it.

You want to pump preimum, regular comes at a cost.

Reliability: You can't beat a Toyota. VW has good engineering, but even consumer reports said the GTI isn't tbe best, but for $18k you'll be happy, just keep up with regular maintenance.

x2...these cars are reliable if you take care of them. I don't know many people on the forum who've had any major issues, mostly small annoyances. But beware none the less that VW's can be somewhat quirky. Just be prepared for it. Also, 25 mpg is very low, typically our cars get closer to 30-31 average on the highway. Yes, use premium though. 91 is acceptable, 93 probably slightly better.
