Default Need some opinions from the owners

Hi guys I am currently getting rid of the two cars I own and looking to pick up only one that can fill both spots. A daily driver and a fun car. I had a 98 maxima that I gave to my grandfather because he needed a car and I am currently selling my supercharged LS3 Corvette.

The 08 R32 has really captured my imagination and I am highly considering picking one up as soon as the vette sells. However, here is my question for the owners. I have recently seen the rumors and news that VW is scrapping the 3.2 and now going with a new model called the R20. It is saying a lighter version with around 270hp and slightly revamped looks. I'll be honest that sounds great BUT I am not sure if I should wait this out on the rumor that this car MAY be release and is "possibly" coming to America.

I had originally thought I could just pick up an 08 and if the want for more power eventually I could mod the car. Then I started to see that there is not really much of an aftermarket for the MK5 R32. Why is that? Some people have said because the DSG tranny cannot support much more power than it already comes with. Is this true or are there aftermarket companies that have come up with a fix for this? Also I realize that power and acceleration are NOT my main goals here. If they were I would just keep my car since it makes about 700hp on low boost. My goal is for a fun car that is good in all areas. Luxury, peppy, fun, and the awd is great because NJ sometimes has bad winters.

Anyway I am sure that since I am posing this question to the owners I would get good feedback as to what they thought when they heard the apparent news of the forthcoming R20. Do you think the wait will be worth it or would you suggest picking up an 08 and hopefully the aftermarket for the cars will increase. Also it seems like the R32 took a long time to make its way over to the USA so that same trend may follow in which case picking up a new or low mile 08 would make more sense. Thanks for any info and opinions you guys share.

Chris

The main difference between the R32 and the GTI is the awd system in the R32. The performance difference, practically speaking, is pretty small. Most likely the R20 will also be awd but use the 2.0 liter, 4-cyl engine with a more robust turbo to make the 270 hp. As a consequence, it will be lighter than the present R32 which uses the 3.2 liter, 6-cylinder engine and probably faster. The chances of more gear for the 4-cylinder engine would also be better, since the main reason for the lack of performance gear for the 3.2 is its smaller production numbers.

I have heard about the R20 but like you said the R32 did take a little while to get here and the rumor is it will take the R20 a while to make it to the U.S. if it comes at all. A forum has been started about the R20 I will post the link.

Either Wait Out The Possible R20 Or Buy A Mk4 R32 ....Unless ur Willing To get A Euro Mk5 R32 Which Came With A 6Speed Manaul Option . To Me Since They Made The US Mk5 R32 DSG Only It Is A EPIC Fail . My R20 DESTROYED A R32 When I Was Stock. So The Way My Car Is Now Its Pointless To Even Waste Gas One Playing With One Now .

I agree, the mkiv r32 is the only real .:R VWoA made in the past decade...

Rumors are spread and the R20 may be released next year, so you could sell the Vette, buy a mkiv to tie you over and trade it in for the r20...

I love all R32's. Wait, I love the sound of that sexy VR6.

The DSG can take power and there are mods out there to be done. They are just expensive and low hp increases.

In all honesty, the DSG isn't all that bad if you do lots of daily traffic.
