I know I've seen the thread before, or at least thought i have, but I cant seem to find it now. I just hit 1200 miles in my Fast and was wondering when I should be doing my first oil change? My dealer told me not until 10k miles but that just seems liike an obscene amount of miles...I've always been religious about doing them every 3k miles....Anyone have a suggestion/advice?

I did my first oil change at 500 miles (after the break in period), and after that around 4K miles intervals. Your dealer probably doesn't want to change ur oil because they are lazy hah. But seriously, the smaller the intervals between oil changes, the better it is for the engine. (not to say change ur oil every week, but u get the picture). Also, try Mobil 1 0W-40
, its good stuff

Yea, 10k seemed like a huge stretch, I'm prob gonna do the first one at around 1500 or so, then 3k so i can start my "timer" there , but why 0w-40? Any real significance?

0W-40 is a thinner oil, nd its what the europeans use. You can use the recommended oils if u want, but I read somewhere that 0W-40 feels better for a longer time. I've had 0W40 for only about 1500 miles so for, and I like it. Also, just make sure u buy something full synthetic.

any oil that meets the vw 502 standard will work, it will state on the container that it does or doesent. Mobile1 0w 40 does and thats what i just started using. i do my oil about 3k or so, even though its full synthetic. dont listen to the dealer on that one, i would change my first oil out by 3k just to get all of the breaking in stuff out of there.

Try reading your manual - it tells you all about the recommended oil changes. For 2007, the first change was at 5000 miles, then 10,000 and every 10,000 after that. Make sure you use an oil that meets the VW/Audi 502.00 standard. Mobil 0w-40 is fine, but VW recommends Castrol 5w-40 (look at the oil filler cap!) The last thing VW wants is someone coming in with a bad engine that they have to rebuild that has followed their recommended oil change interval, so I believe that their schedule is already conservative. Synthetic oils will be fine over the longer intervals, compared to standard oils, so doing more is probably a waste. Changing your oil more often that recommended, in addition, means that you have to dispose of the old oil, to the detriment of the environment. Make sure you take it to a recycling center.

I bought my car with 12522 miles on it and put in full synthetic every 5k miles. She seems to be happy with that combination

The dealer told me that it needed to be changed every 10k miles.. and if I change it myself it will void my 36k mile maint free ****..
So how do I get around this? I want to keep the main free contract but i feel the same way about 10k miles on non synthetic oil. Its gotta go bad by then.. |

thats bullsh!t 10k on the same oil. i will never do that to my GTI. 3k and no more then that. i would say 5k would be the most with synthetic oil.

5k max, and that goes for pretty much any vehicle
My dealership told me I can get is done somewhere else (most likely cheaper than them) and save the receipts. Doing it on your own?...maybe just get a receipt from someone who went to mr. lube and lie?

I am just going to change it myself and try to get the same oil filter that is on there stock.. there is no way they would ever be able to know right? |

well, technically your dealer is right. at 10k miles you NEED to change your oil.
but the manual does recommend that you change it every 10k. i change my own oil every 7k. but i'm putting on atleast 500 miles a week just from commuting to work. and changing it every 3k would just kill me. besides doing it yourself will save you about 15 bucks from going to the dealer. |
