You're probably talking about the tool needed to drain the oil out of the filter housing?? You can bypass that step and risk spilling a little oil when you wrench off the filter housing. Unless you want to purchase that tool - I think they are going around $80

I was just clowning around. That's a pretty cool link, and if I wasn't stuck in an apartment lease for another year (with a no car repair in the garage policy), I would definitely attempt it at least once.

i work on trucks alot, with turbos. i just got and 07 mkv in stead of buying that 80$ tool what i do on the trucks is after i drain the oil out of the pan i crank the engine ownce or twice DO NOT START IT you could mess up your turbo so dont start the thing just crank it and most of the oil shoud get pumped out. im going to try it when i do mine but i havent done it yet with my car because ive only got 2k on it. so its worth a try.

As I mentioned before the hacker attack. Unscrew the small cap off the bottom of the oil cartridge holder and push something like an allen key wrench up against the orange nipple inside. It is spring loaded so use some force (you can push it to the side a little and it will wedge itself open) Allowing the oil to drain out of the holder..

I wouldn't want to be turning over the engine while the oil is drained...

No need to buy the tool. I just use the same Torx screwdriver used to take off the bottom cover. Push that nipple up (it takes a little force) and angle it to the side. It will stay open and your oil will drain. Then proceed with removing the filter.

I just did my second oil change. I buy the filter from the stealership ($17) and use Mobil 1 0W40. It comes out to be a little less than $50 and takes only about 10 minutes. How much does the dealer usually charge

Unless you're only 3" tall laying on your back then you'll probably need to lift the car. I drive mine up onto some cheap ramps I bought at AutoZone for $20. Come to think of it, I've never actually tried doing it without lifting the car. You have to remove the bottom cowling which has like 10 screws or so. I guess if you can manage to maneuver your arm under there and see what you're doing then you wouldn't have to lift the car. But I'm sure it's a hell of a lot easier with it in the air. If you're able to do it without lifting your Fast let us know.

Drive it up on a curb if you don't have ramps. Climb under the car let the oil drain out. Open up a frosty PBR/Schlitz/Blatz beer and enjoy. Followed by installation of a new filter and oil and the oil pan screw.

Enjoy another beer and envy in the work you just did.

I was talking to a friend at work about the issue with oil changes for the GTI yesterday, and he told me two things that may interest you: 1) He said that if you are running the correct oil, you should EASILY be able to go 10,000 + miles between oil changes. 2) He stated that you should always use the correct oil... 5 - 40 full synthetic (he recommended Castrol). Oh, he happens to be a Master Craftsman certified by VW Germany.

Just some general knowledge about changing oil. First you do want to use the correct oil 5w-40 full synthetic Castrol is recomended by VW.

Second is if you don't care about a little oil on the floor, your hand, and some of the oil pan. Then just pull the lower oil filter cover off and then clean it up. Since the oil has to drain through the filter into that little nipple drain, it can take some time before all the oil is out of the casing.

Next is that VW and Castrol both say you can go 10,000 miles before you need to change the oil. OIL NEVER GOES BAD the lubricating factor of today's oils will last nearly forever in your engine. HOWEVER the detergents in the oil do go bad. That is the main reason you need to change oil, to clean out the inside of your engine. Little peices of dirt and other junk get into the cylinder walls of you engine. The more you change your oil the more the detergents in the oil can keep your cylinder walls clean. I don't mean to change your oil every 1000 miles the detergents last longer than that. With full synthetic 5000 is my limit. I currently have been doing 3000 mile changes till i get to 15000 miles then i will go to 5000 mile changes.

I drive my car hard and want to keep it in the best shape I can. So if you don't take your GTI to the track all the time 10000 miles is going to be just fine, and it probably would be on a track GTI too, but it doesn't hurt to change it a little more often.

I don't have to worry about oil changes for 4 years. When I got the car we 4 years basic maintenance. so no paying for tire rotations, oil changes, etc. for 4 years.

I took my fast to the dealer the other day for it's 5000 mile oil change which was free. It took about 45 min and i was on my way again. When i got back home something told me to check the oil level, come to find out it was a 1/2 quart low. From now on i will change my own oil. Plus they used Castrol 5/40 Syn Blend. Who wants Syn Blend? Not me.

Wait a minute now. Your engine needs to have a synthetic blead or just regular oil when breeaking the engine in. After the engine is fully broken in, then full synthetic can be used. Synthetics are too spliipery fro break in and everything cannot seat if full synthetic is used.
Now, with 5000 miles, you probably will be ok and full sysnthetic wouldn't hurt, but then again......running a synthetic blend isn't going to hurt you either and really take away performance........just my $0.02.

Okay, I haven't been on here in a while so hello to everyone again. I drive a 2006 TR DSG and i did my first oil change myself today (it was the cars second oil change). Well after reading everything on this forum and other forums i thought it was going to be a pain in the but to do. People kept talking about how much of a mess it makes and what not. I have always done my own oil changes in all the cars i have owned ( i'm only 21 so its not a lot but still). I figured why pay 70 bucks at thedealer when i can buy everything at Autozone for 40 bucks. I bought the STP filter and the Castrol Full synthetic 5w-30 oil. I went with the 5w-30 bc it is what the manual for the car says to use if 5w-40 can not be found and everywhere i went was out of it in either the mobile one or the castrol. So i said it can't make that much of a difference and it says to use it in the manual. I just want to let everyone know that if you have any type of mechanical sense at all the oil change on this car is very simple. The tools needed are a 19mm wrench and a 1 1/2 socket. I didn't take pictures but i'm going to explain it step by step.

1: Once the car is jacked up or on ramps your choice, Start by removing the plastic cover on the bottom of the engine. This does require a torqes set. I am not sure what size it was but its a standard size if you have a set of them. This requires the removal of 8 screws and pulling of it to release the clips that hold it in.

2: Removing the drain plug which can be found in the back of the oil pan. this requires the 19 mm wrench just becareful to not lose the washer of the end of the plug into the oil. Once removed wait for all the oil to drain out and replace plug and tighten.

3: Removing the filter is the next step. I went with the STP filter because all of the other filter brands gave a number for a regular screw on filter and that is not what the GTI takes, It is actually just a replacement cartridge. To remove the oil filter take the 1 and 1/2 socket and just losen it a little, it is not very tight so take it easy on it. Just becareful not to losen to much do it a little by little until some oil spills out of it and the procced to let the oil drain out of the filter. Once that is complete you can finish taking the filter off. Then just pull off the old cartridge and replace it with the new one. The new one should come with a gasket to replace there is a little tab on the old one to pull it off with. Make sure to put the new gasket on the same way you took the old on off.

4: Next put the filter back on the car this is the only tricky part if you don't have a torque wrench. ON the outside of the filter housing it says 25.5 NM which is how tight to tighten down. If you do not know the conversion it is 18 Foot/lbs. You will need a torque wrench to do this just becareful bc it is not very tight so you could very easily over tighten it if you are not paying attention.

5: Then finish by filling the oil back up it takes 5 quarts. I put 4 1/2 in and then start it and let it run about 5 min and lower it down (don't forget to replace the plastic piece that you took off the bottom.) Then check the level and you will probably need to add the last half a quart of oil.

6: If you do not already know how to reset the "Service Now" in your computer it is very simple.
1.Insert Key ( do not turn just insert)
2.Hold down the 0.0 Trip button
3.Turn key (while still holding down trip button)
4. Press the "m" button on the clock settings
5. Release both buttons and no more "service now"

I don't know if this will actually help any body but if it does i'm glad because i'm saving my self 30 bucks an oil change now and that is money i can do other stuff to my car with.

Thank for the help reseting my computer. I was holding the 0.0 button but I did not know about the "m" button!

Also as far as oil changes use Mobil 1 synthetic 5-40 and follow the recommended intervals and your not going to have any problems. My engineer and many others swear by this.

With the oil filter change, did anyone else read that the filter housing needed to be torqued to 25.5 Nm. This made me laugh pretty hard. When I changed my oil i took the housing off after draining the pan, but the oil went everywhere.

If you dont want to by the OEM filters, STP makes the toilet paper filter that works. Thats what i used
