Hello. I currently own a vw gti mk5 2008. I bought it in january of 2008, and since september of 2008, my car started making a squeaky noise everytime I step on the break. The noise happens only when the car is still cold. (Or I guess when the break are still cold.) Because after driving it for a while, it stops making the noise. it started to make that noise around 9,000 miles. Is this common
should I replace the brakes? does warranty cover my problem?? let me know. thanks!.-Pablo Park- |

Totally normal. Especially if it is cold and/or humid. It makes you feel ghetto when you roll up on another sweet ride.

Thanks for your reply. I guess you are right. Because I live in Miami. And it tends to get really humid here... although we are experiencing beautiful weather right now. Is this going to go away? or do I have to live with this forever?

Thank you guys so much, especially Redshift. I will see how everything comes out after a while. So I guess I should not worry about it too much right now.

It's normal and it's a buildup of rust and brake dust. To get rid of this noise (really the film), step on your brakes harder than normal as you pull out of your garage/driveway/parking spot. If you also do this at your first stop, like the stop sign or traffic signal at the corner/end of the parking lot/etc., it will help. To keep this from happening avoid braking at very light loads, say <5% of your total braking power. Remember, I'm not saying slam on your brakes every time.

yeah, the above post is right, hit the brakes a little harder to grind off the rust/dust. this works, but will also lessen the life of the pads. not alot, but still, you can grind it off, or let it slowly go away at a more annoying pace

Thank you for your replies. I knew about the stepping on the brakes a little harder. but that does not mean I have to change anything on them right
or do I? or should I clean them? wash them?? suggestions Thank you.-Pablo Park- |

In humid climates like Miami, it's normal for your brake disks to become slightly rusty, especially when sitting overnight. Next time you go out in the morning, take a look and you will probably see some rust build-up on the disks. The first time you hit the brakes, the rust can cause some squeaking. As you have noticed, after a few applications of the brakes, it stops because the rust has been cleaned off by the pads. As a couple of others have said, applying the brakes firmly the first time helps because it will remove the rust more quickly. Bottom line, unless the noise persists, I wouldn't worry about it. If it doesn't go away (and there will come a day), then you need to check to see if your pads are worn enough to need replacement. The folks who make pads attach a metal "finger" which will rub against the disk when the pad is worn down to where it needs replacing, causing a squeaking noise and eventually a grinding noise, every time you apply the brakes. That's the sign that you can't ignore it any longer. Not using the brakes hard occasionally can make the disks become glazed and that can cause continual squeaking as well. A couple of excursions with a heavy brake foot will usually cure the condition.
