Default 40k mile service....is it really needed?

so i'm nearing 41k miles on my car and have been contemplating whether or not i should be getting the 40k mile service done on it. Reason i ask is because typically the 40k miles service is not done till about 4.5 years after purchase, at the most. And i've only had my car for about 17 months. and some of the items that are listed in the manual, in my opinion, aren't yet necessary. like the brake fluid for example. it says to replace it after 3 years. Also, i let service know that i had an intake and that i had chipped the car and asked if their would be any issues with those things, he said no but that they wouldnt be able to hook up the comp. to it. and he also mentioned the main things that they do are the pollen filter, the spark plugs and one other thing that i can't remember. but again, i'm assuming that they would replace the filter if needed, as well as the spark plugs. but after 17 mo. would they really need to be replaced? and for the price of over $600, i have a hard time justifying it.

Service intervals are measured both by time and milage for a reason. If I had 41K on my car, I'd pony up the $600 just get it done.

They're feeding you complete bullshiit about not being able to hook up the computer if you're 'chipped'. I would find another dealer, and not mention anything abouth the modifications done to your car. I have a TON of mods done to my car, haven't mentioned anything to my dealer, and they haven't said a word to me. I just go in for service like normal, and it gets done. Just go to another dealer and ask for the service and be done with it. Good luck.

As far as brake fluid, it's time or mileage, which ever come first. Absolutely do it. Brake fluid will break down as time/use move on since it is still mineral based. That part shouldn't be that expensive. Same goes for tranny fluid, especially with the DSG.

When I had my old Nissan- My dealership voided the warranty on my tires when I was running nitrogen in them instead of compressed air...

Some dealerships are pretty strict.

So I finally went ahead and got it done. The damage only came out to 400 but only because I had already done the oil change, rotated the tires and didnt need the air filter replaced because of my intake, and the fact that i had a 10% off coupon didnt hurt either. only downer was that i got flashed back to stock. i'll probablly get rechipped next week.

Hmmm....I may look into that...just doing the majority of the work myself, then having them change the DSG fluid.... Seems like a good compromise, since I definitely really don't feel like messing with the tranny...

If it's not too much trouble, could you post a breakdown of what exactly you had done? It would be helpful for the rest of us to compare what our dealers would want to do. Thanks.

Thats pretty much what I went off at first. Once I got to the service desk, i played the fool and asked what all was involved in the 40k mile service, and they had their own list. In my opinion that would be the best thing to do, that way you can cross reference what they will do vs. what is recommended in the manual. But once there, you have to let them know what you dont want done and they should put it in writing and then you'll sign off on it.
the guy was pretty cool, he also let me know that the service for the dsg was coming up soon and that it would be a bit pricey as well.

At the risk of being sarcastic, I know that. Rarely do people in forums like this follow the service recommendations in the manual due to mods, or work they perform themselves(like I do).

Thanks for the answer. How pricey(dare I ask) for the DSG service?

I would say yes it is neccisary, They had a huge list of issh they were suposed to do like grease all the hinges, sunroof, this that blah blah blah, I got the car back and my headlight was not aligned, It had been out of wack before I took it in but I didn't say anything to see if they really did all that stuff on the list (align headlights) for the money. They don't. they also left one of my lug nuts off and I went back and bit*ched to the manager that everything I payed for was not done. He knocked it down like 20 or 30 dollars I think blah blah.

Oh my point was... they had to change my timing belt and tensioner @ the 40k service... so It was worth getting all that checked

Ya I had told them the previous year that my belts squick on cold start during the winter. They said everthing was ok, than I took it in for the 40k service and told them the belt was really pissing me off (thinking it was just the Aux. belt because my A/C unit exploded around 20k) They called me up and said they have to replace the timing belt and tensioner. They usually find something to replace under warranty every other time I'm there. Kinda scary when you think about being out of warranty eventually.
